Llandough Hospital – Merriott Case Study

Llandough Hospital, situated on the outskirts of the bustling city of Cardiff, was built to replace the 108-year-old mental health unit, Whitchurch Hospital. The £88m development and build of the new unit meant the ‘dilapidated’ condition and ‘cold’ feel of the Whitchurch facility could be revamped into something modern, therapeutic and welcoming for inpatients recovering there.

In January 2012, Engineering Services specialists WSP, who were the design consultants for the project, specified commercial heating specialists Merriott and their robust LST (Low Surface Temperature) radiators to be used for the project. The new facility was designed using Building Information Modelling (BIM) on which Merriott lists all of its product models.

Area Sales Manager, Darren Broad provided the advice and pricing for Merriott’s LSTs, with 10 vertical and 17 horizontal LSTs. These included newly designed and developed anti-ligature mesh grilles being installed to ensure the safety of patients in the new mental health facility.

Darren Broad says: “It was a pleasure to work on the Llandough Hospital project. Our LSTs are extremely robust meaning they can withstand big knocks and bangs resulting in them being widely installed in hospitals. Their quality and sturdiness ensure they stand the test of time in this type of environment.”

The new mental health facility, backed by the Welsh Government, consists of 135 beds over 10 wards. The two storey building of around 2,000m2 was officially opened on 17th March 2016 after 2 and a half years of building work.

It was aptly named ‘Hafen y Coed’ meaning ‘Haven of Trees’.
